Calculates the engagement rate of a social post by followers, by reach and by impressions, and names the formula behind each result. It shows every formula it can compute instead of choosing one for you, and uses no benchmark. For anyone comparing posts or reading a report built on a different formula.
How to use it
Copy the numbers from the platform's analytics. The result updates as you type, and nothing leaves your browser.
- Enter the likes of the post, and its comments, shares and saves if the platform shows them.
- Enter your follower count at the time of the post.
- Optionally enter the post's reach and impressions to get the other formulas.
- Read each named rate, and compare posts only by the same formula.
How Reavlo tests this
The calculator divides interactions by an audience number. Platforms and tools differ in which number they use, so every formula that has its input is shown and named. Every step is listed under Show the math.
- Interactions = likes + comments + shares + saves.
- Rate by followers = interactions ÷ followers.
- Rate by reach = interactions ÷ reach, the unique accounts that saw the post.
- Rate by impressions = interactions ÷ impressions, every time the post was shown.
Rates are stored as 0 to 1, rounded to 6 decimals and shown as percentages. Reavlo shows no "good" engagement rate: there is no reliable public benchmark that fits every network, audience size and post type.
Findings. Two rules run on the result.
- ENG-01, interactions above reach or impressions (warning). Interactions cannot normally exceed the people or views they come from, so the figures probably cover different posts or periods. Followers are not checked, because a post can reach people who do not follow you.
- ENG-02, only one formula (info). With a single audience number there is nothing to compare against other tools or reports.
Limits. Platforms define interactions differently, and some do not report saves, shares or reach. Enter only what the platform reports for that post and keep the same set of interactions when you compare posts.
Questions
How is engagement rate calculated?
Add the interactions on a post and divide by an audience number: followers, reach or impressions. Each gives a different rate, so always say which one you used.
Which engagement rate formula should I use?
Use the one your platform report or your comparison uses, and stay with it. Reach is closest to the people who saw the post; followers is the easiest to compare across accounts.
What is a good engagement rate?
Reavlo does not give one, because no reliable source covers every network and audience. Compare your own posts by the same formula over time.
Why can the rate by followers be above 100%?
A post can collect more interactions than you have followers when it is shared beyond them. The rate by reach or impressions should normally stay below 100%.
