Something looks wrong? Tell us what looks wrong

Checks English copy for its reading level, long sentences, passive voice, filler words and jargon, and marks each problem in your text with a suggested fix. For founders and marketers who want a first-time visitor to follow the page.

How to use it

Paste the copy you are about to publish: a landing page section, an email, a product description. Read the level first, then work through the findings from the top.

  1. Paste your text, or load the example. Counts of words, sentences and characters update as you type.
  2. Press Run check, or Ctrl/⌘ + Enter.
  3. Read the reading level and the findings. Choose Show in text to select the passage a finding points at.
  4. Edit the text and run the check again. The highlights clear while you edit, so they never point at the wrong words.

How Reavlo tests this

The text is analysed in your browser. It is split into sentences and words with an English tokenizer (abbreviations such as Mr. and e.g., decimals such as 3.5 and web addresses don't end a sentence or count as words). Every finding points at character ranges in your text.

Reading level. Reavlo shows the Flesch-Kincaid grade level (Kincaid et al., 1975), 0.39 × words per sentence + 11.8 × syllables per word − 15.59, and the Flesch reading ease (Flesch, 1948), 206.835 − 1.015 × words per sentence − 84.6 × syllables per word. Syllables are estimated from vowel groups, so the figures are a guide, not an exact measurement. There is no overall score: the level is shown with its formula and the counts it was computed from.

Findings. A sentence of more than 25 words is flagged. A grade above 12 is flagged. Passive voice is detected as a form of to be followed by a past participle. Filler words come from a short fixed list (very, really, just, actually and similar). Jargon comes from the jargon-lexicon dataset, built from public plain-language style guides; each entry carries its source and the date it was read.

Limits. English only: other languages are not analysed and their results are not meaningful. Passive voice and syllables are heuristics and can be wrong in both directions. The check can't judge whether your audience knows a term.

Questions

Is my text uploaded?

No. The check runs in your browser and nothing you paste is sent to a server or stored. If Google Analytics is enabled on this site, it only records that the tool ran, never your text.

What reading level should I aim for?

Public plain-language guidance for general audiences usually points at lower secondary school. Treat the grade as a guide: short sentences and common words matter more than the exact number.

Does it work for languages other than English?

No. The tokenizer, the syllable estimate and the word lists are English only, so results for other languages are not meaningful.

Why is there no score out of 100?

A single number would hide how it was reached. Reavlo shows the grade with the formula that produced it, plus the counts and every finding.
